A Potential Return to MMA for Matt Riddle in 2024
Former UFC fighter and professional wrestler Matt Riddle has hinted at a possible return to mixed martial arts (MMA) by 2024. At 37, Riddle remains a prominent figure in combat sports, having successfully transitioned from the octagon to the wrestling ring. Despite his tenure in professional wrestling, Riddle's recent statements have sparked discussions about his future in competitive fighting.
While details remain scarce, Riddle has been in talks with various organizations about a potential comeback. The Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that there could be interest from both bare-knuckle fighting promotions and the Professional Fighters League (PFL), indicating a wide array of opportunities for the seasoned athlete.
From UFC Streak to Pro Wrestling Stardom
Riddle's last appearance in an MMA fight dates back to February 2014 when he faced Michael Kuiper under the Titan FC banner. Prior to this, he had made a name for himself in the UFC, leaving the promotion on a four-fight winning streak after a victory over Che Mills in 2013. However, two of these wins were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, leading to criticism from UFC President Dana White.
Despite the controversy, Riddle views White's public remarks as a catalyst for his wrestling persona. "I have to thank Dana, because if he were to just fire me and not say anything, nobody probably would've knew about me," Riddle reflected. His ability to resonate with fans who have experienced similar rebukes has contributed to the development of his 'bro' character, which has become a staple of his wrestling identity.
Transition to the Wrestling Ring
After parting ways with the UFC, Riddle embarked on a new career path in professional wrestling. He began training in 2014 and made his debut the following year. Riddle quickly found success on the independent circuit, capturing several titles and establishing himself as a formidable presence.
In 2018, Riddle joined WWE NXT and further cemented his reputation by winning the NXT Tag Team Championship with Pete Dunne. His ascent continued as he moved to the main roster, securing the United States Championship in February 2021. Alongside Randy Orton, he formed the tag team "RK-Bro," claiming the Raw Tag Team Championship twice.
Despite his wrestling commitments, Riddle maintains a rigorous martial arts regimen, practicing multiple times a week and holding a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. This continued dedication to combat sports was evident when he was spotted at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, showcasing his ongoing interest in the fighting world.
The Future for Riddle: Fighting or Wrestling?
Riddle's future in combat sports seems to hold numerous possibilities. "There's been a lot of talk. I've been talking to a couple of promotions," he told MMA Junkie. "I don't want to get into it until it's official, but I think in 2024 there's a very big possibility that I get back in the ring or cage pretty soon." This statement leaves the door open for a return to MMA, where he could either resume his winning ways or find closure in the sport that launched his career.
Despite the acrimonious end to his time in the UFC, Riddle harbors no ill will. "I never say never," he said. "If the opportunity is right. I don't really hold a grudge." These words suggest a maturity and openness to whatever paths may unfold in his athletic journey.
Riddle reminisces about his departure from MMA with a sense of pride and accomplishment, acknowledging his seamless transition to pro wrestling. "I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," he stated. "I did good (and am) still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"
As a free agent, Riddle's combat sports trajectory remains in his hands. Whether he chooses to continue entertaining fans in the wrestling ring or steps back into the cage for another bout, his skills and showmanship ensure that audiences will be eagerly watching. With a potential MMA return on the horizon, Matt Riddle continues to keep fans guessing about his next move in an already storied career.
