Saquon Barkley Electrifies Philadelphia Eagles Fans Despite Workload Concerns
Philadelphia Eagles fans have every reason to be thrilled this season with the addition of star running back Saquon Barkley, whose early performances are nothing short of spectacular. In just two games, Barkley has amassed an impressive 52 touches, showing why he is considered one of the premier running backs in the NFL.
Impressive Start to the Season
Barkley, who has recorded exactly 26 touches in each of the first two games, is currently averaging a remarkable 4.8 yards per touch. His performance marks his highest average since 2019, cementing his status as a key player in the Eagles’ offense. In Week 1, Barkley carried the ball 24 times and averaged 4.5 yards per carry. In Week 2, he maintained his high level of play with 22 carries, averaging 4.3 yards per carry.
These numbers not only highlight Barkley's consistency but also his ability to make significant gains with the ball. Eagles' fans, who have long awaited the arrival of a dynamic running back, can now see their dreams realized with Barkley's electrifying contributions on the field.
A Historical Perspective
Should Barkley continue at his current pace, he is projected to finish the season with 442 touches. This would be a monumental achievement, as the last running back to reach such a number was DeMarco Murray in 2014, during his tenure with the Dallas Cowboys. However, Eagles fans might recall that Murray faced challenges with the team, recording the lowest yards-per-carry average of his career at 3.6 during his time with Philadelphia.
Le'Veon Bell’s experience further underscores the difficulty of maintaining high performance with such a heavy workload. Bell recorded 406 touches in 2017, only to hold out in 2018 for a lucrative contract extension. By 2019, his production had significantly decreased, showcasing one of the lowest yards-per-carry averages at 3.3 among running backs with 250 or more carries.
Managing the Workload
Eagles’ management is acutely aware of the need to monitor Barkley's workload to prevent any potential decline in performance or increase in injury risk. Offensive coordinator Kellen Moore has addressed these concerns, stating, "Obviously from a longevity standpoint as the season progresses, we've got to be aware of it." Moore emphasized the importance of weekly management, adding, "We certainly recognize that and understand that aspect of it. We've got to do at times a better job of that as the game goes on, especially when you look at it more from a week-to-week perspective."
Barkley, on his part, remains unfazed by the heavy workload. "I have no worries about that. That's why I train the way I do in the offseason, and the work I do in camp and in season to be able to take on the workload,” said Barkley. He also credited the Eagles' staff for their support, stating, "I think we do a good job of managing that here. Whether I do that on my own or take care of my body. Our guys in the strength room and training room do a really great job of monitoring that."
Looking Forward
Kellen Moore echoed Barkley's sentiments, praising the running back’s resilience and desire for the ball. "I think that's definitely fair. I think Saquon -- he wants the rock. He's done a phenomenal job," Moore said, highlighting Barkley's crucial role in the Eagles’ offensive strategy.
As the season progresses, all eyes will be on how the Eagles balance Barkley's touches to maintain his impressive performance while ensuring his long-term health and effectiveness. For now, Philadelphia fans can continue to relish the excitement that Saquon Barkley brings to each game, providing a much-needed spark to their beloved team.
